In 2004, the Perdido Bay Tribe of Southeastern Lower Muscogee Creek Indians was formed in Pensacola, FL, and is the first of its kind in the United States. It was founded by Bobby Johns Bearheart, who was named a Master Folk Artist by the Florida Folk Life Division of Cultural Affairs. He was the first Creek to receive the Florida Folklife Heritage Award. During his career, he was a teacher, mentor, and guest speaker. In 1990, he began the Perdido Bay Tribe of Southwestern Lower Muscogee Creek Indians and the museum opened its doors in Pensacola, FL.
